Abstract

Traditional sago processing in Aklan, Philippines has never been properly studied or improved. A sequential explanatory approach was used involving 35 sago processors. The study revealed that sago processors still use primitive manual methods, require a lot of hard labour, and harm the environment because of dumping untreated wastewater into local nature. This traditional knowledge leads to their hard conditions to survive. Based on the analysis of the study, sago processors have great technical skill, but they are held back by poor infrastructure, such as 71% lacking farm-to-market roads, and 88% relying on inefficient manual tools. The findings show that the industry survives purely on community teamwork and social bonds, like shared labour (86%), rather than actual support from the government or official institutions. Thus, the SAGO Training program was introduced in order to shift traditional practices into a sustainable business. This 12-month project is divided into three stages: curriculum design in line with RA 10611 and GMPs, hands-on implementation focused on optimising extraction and waste-to-value conversion, and impact assessment. The scalable model aims to save local industries while meeting modern safety and environmental standards. Its expected output includes professional certification for processors, reduced environmental pollutants through better waste management, and improved market access.
